I didn't do it!
The sad reality is that whether or not you did it may not make any difference. Many innocent people end up being punished by the legal system. A simple Google search will reveal many articles regarding the thousands of innocent people charged with serious crimes in this country.
How does that happen?
Because the public demands results. Our elected officials are under a lot of pressure from the voting public to "do something" about crime. Crime rates are published in the newspapers and on television, and the citizens get nervous. In an attempt to satisfy the public, the government will use it's highly-trained and experienced police officers, detectives, and prosecutors to convict somebody (sometimes anybody) of these crimes. This "somebody" could be you.
What can I do? Can't I handle it myself?
You could represent yourself, and you certainly have that right. However, the criminal process can be confusing and intimidating. You are probably not familiar with the hundreds of rules regarding evidence, criminal procedure, and court proceedings. There are certain procedures that must be followed, and if you don't follow the rules exactly, you could forever lose your opportunity to prove your case. You need an attorney to guide you though the system!
